Michael Angelakis, Comcast's highly regarded as vice chairman and chief financial officer, continues to be named towards the board of company directors from the influential Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia for any three-year term beginning in The month of january. It will not impact his role in the effective Philadelphia-based entertainment giant, where he added the vice chairman title recently and works as a key agent to topper John Roberts. Angelakis became a member of Comcast in 2007 from the perch as controlling director of Providence Equity Partners, leading to a stir by becoming among the couple of media top professionals to leap from private equity finance -- it always goes another way. 'Expendables 2' Trailer: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Guns
Your favorite action stars of yesteryear have arrived in a gun-toting, plotless teaser for 'The Expendables 2.' Plotless, because there are approximately 20 seconds of footage in this, most of it dedicated to Bruce Willis' character, Mr. Church, speaking in a growly voice to Sylvester Stallone's Barney Ross. There are also several cutaways to the cast shooting assault rifles (including Arnold Schwarzenegger, who hasn't fired a gun onscreen since 2003's 'Terminator 3'). That said, it's not like this film is aiming for Oscar glory -- this is supposed to be a shoot-em-up, badass blockbuster. From the looks of it, it will easily exceed those expectations. 'The Expendables 2,' which stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme (or, as the trailer states, "also Van Damme"), Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, and tennis star Novak Djokovic (seriously), explodes into theaters Aug. 17, 2012. "But this was a good one." "I had no reason whatsoever to expect that I would be included in this company. That I was is astounding." With nominations coming the day after news broke that Two and a Half Men co-creator Chuck Lorrenearly quit the CBS hitcom after public battles with the show's former star Charlie Sheen, Cryer said he learned of the news after doing the interview for the story. "It was awful to watch because he really considered himself a friend of Charlie's. I remember the day he came into my dressing room and he was practically in tears and said, 'I don't know what to do, something is very wrong with Charlie' and he was begging me to talk to him. Obviously, I did but I don't know what good it did." Cryer was able to play the role of the messenger later Wednesday, when he told Lorre news of not only his mention for Men but also The Big Bang Theory's first comedy ensemble nomination in a text exchange. TV Ratings: 'Fear Factor' Stages a Welcome Return, CBS Still on Top
Bloomberg/Getty Images On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee plans to mark up and vote on the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), an important piece of legislation that's been fostering fervent debate in recent weeks. In advance of the markup, Rep. Lamar Smith, chairman of the committee, has made some tweaks in a so-called manager's amendment, aimed at building support by attempting to clarify the bill's main targets as foreign "rogue" websites, narrowing definitions of bad actors, limiting the private right of action that allow copyright and trademark owners to sue, and addressing concerns that anti-piracy measures could eventually denigrate the security and integrity of the Internet. The changes are in direct reaction to criticism that has transcended political parties, and the modifications were welcomed by the entertainment industry lobby and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. But the new version of SOPA still has not gone nearly far enough in narrowing its definitions and curtailing its service provider obligations to appease leading technology companies and other groups rallying against the bill. One of the main criticisms against SOPA is that it's de facto "censorship," requiring ISPs at times to prevent access to infringing sites by making efforts under order to block web browser requests for flagged domain names. The prospect of domain name system (DNS) blocking and filtering has alarmed some who believe it would be intrusive and undercut the secure structure of the Internet. Among the many changes in Rep. Smith's managers amendment is a "savings clause," which not only explicitly clarifies that SOPA is not meant to be a prior restraint on free speech, but also would remove a duty to monitor activity on a network and restrictcourts from making any order that would "impair the security or integrity" of DNS. On the other hand, service providers will still face obligations to cut off access to pirate sites. Under the new version, it will be measures determined to be "least burdensome, technically feasible, and reasonable means designed to prevent access by its subscribers located within the United States to the foreign infringing site that is subject to the order." The italics illustrate new language in the modified bill, clearly designed to convince the tech community that a weight is being lifted from their shoulders. The provision also removes a five day deadline from implementing such action upon a court order, but since the language is deemed vague by many, and application has yet to be seen, many critics believe that is still adds up to anxiety and liability for leading U.S.-based tech companies. Public Knowledge, one of the groups leading the charge against the bill, doesn't believe there has been much progress in the new SOPA. "The amendment continues to encourage DNS blocking and filtering, which should be concerning for internet security experts and human rights activists alike," saidSherwin Siy, deputy legal director of Public Knowledge. Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt also echoed that sentiment. The bill would "criminalize linking and the fundamental structure of the Internet itself," he said yesterday. That reaction brought strong rebuke from the MPAA, which has been attempting to steer legislation through the home stretch. "Schmidt's comment that the legislation 'criminalizes the intermediaries' is a new weapon in their arsenal of hyperbole," said Michael O'Leary, senior executive vp for global policy at the MPAA. "There is broad recognition that all companies in the Internet ecosystem have a serious responsibility to target criminal activity. This type of rhetoric only serves as a distraction and I hope it is not a delaying tactic." Insiders believe that the bill will inevitably pass the House Judiciary Committee before gathering some resistance among the broader Congressional caucus. In recent weeks, opposition to the bill has unified groups as diverse as the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street, albeit it for different reasons. Some think it is government intrusion. Others see it as an inevitable impingement on free speech. Leading tech acolytes such as Twitter general counselAlex Macgillivray andWikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales are delivering a blow-by-blow account of the mounting concerns orproposing proteststo continue to raise awareness. Other critics see the inevitability of new anti-piracy legislation and have been rallying behind an alternative bill entitled the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act (OPEN),sponsored by SOPA critics Sen. Ron Wyden and Republican Rep. Darrell Issa. That alternative bill would take a more modest copyright infringement approach by allowing rights-holders to file petitions against "rogue" foreign sites with the International Trade Commission, which would then be allowed to attack the financial backbone of these sites by drying up funds from credit card processing companies. Supporters of SOPAdoubt the remedy goes far enough to properly address piracy by enhancing obligations from service providers. The debate is likely to only get louder in the next week or so as Congress makes its moves before winter break. In advance, both sides are attempting to position themselves as being the sensible ones in the room by adopting the other side's language. The critics of SOPA say they want to address piracy -- but in a measured way. The supporters of SOPA love free speech -- but need to protect the vibrancy of art. At a speech this morning at the Center of American Progress, MPAA chairman Chris Dodd continued his call for Congress to act now. "I want to make it clear right at the outset that our fight against content theft is not a fight against technology," he said. "Attacking international content theft is not about restricting speech. Quite the opposite. Just as the Constitution defends an artist's right to create, copyright protections defend the artist's ability to do so." Hollywood altitude
A year ago, the international spotlight shone on Whistler as the 2010 Vancouver Olympics captured the imaginations of sports fans, and organizers of the Whistler Film Festival hope they can evoke a similar passion with festgoers as they work to redefine one of the top ski resort towns as a destination for filmmakers.Co-founder Shauna Hardy Mishaw is confident that the boutique fest, in its 11th year, is in the midst of a major growth spurt as it solidifies a relationship with the Canadian Film Institute, finalizes renovation plans for a local movie house, and adopts a modus operandi to amplify its presence in the festival firmament."We want to build on our current position as one of the most important festivals in Canada, and as a place of importance for the industry," Mishaw says. "Whistler is extremely well-located for greatness."With several Canadian fests already capturing the bulk of the attention, particularly in Toronto, Whister is angling a different strategy. The organizers play up the fest's convenience for industry players, with hotels and theatres within short walking distance, which puts the focus on the fest rather than the bustle."People get here and they can connect with the people they want to connect with," she says. "It is an inclusive festival. It's very friendly; it's very intimate."The pedestrian village is nestled in the mountains of British Columbia, a two-hour drive from Vancouver and a relatively short flight from Los Angeles. Timed to coincide with the launch of ski season, the fest initially aimed to draw more traffic to Whistler when room rates were cheap and vacationer traffic was manageable. But as the event built its name, more industryites have noted that it begins on the first weekend in December, which could provide a key launching pad in the final runup to awards season.Mishaw says golden statues were the farthest things from her mind when she created the fest with a university friend in 2001, and ran the operation out of her condo."It was mayhem," she recalls."I had the box office lines ringing out of my house. I'd just started dating my now-husband, and he had to answer the phone."Over time, the festival beefed up its skeleton staff by and formed a board to oversee the operations. Former Toronto Film Fest programmer Stacey Donen joined the ranks in 2009 as artistic director, and with him brought a new level of attention."We've started to get a reputation as a filmmakers festival," Donen says. "That's something that's really important to me, to treat the filmmakers well and respect their work."This year, the fest will award C$50,000 ($48,832) in prizes and commissions, with six juried competitions and one audience award. The top prizes are the $15,000 Borsis Competition for Canadian Feature, named after helmer Phillip Borsos, and the $10,000 New Voices award for first- or second-time directors. Organizers estimate about 10,000 people, and 5,000 industry players, will attend the programming and conferences.Mishaw hopes Whistler's reputation continues to build with filmmakers as stories circulate about the positive experiences at past fests. One of her favorites is the tale of Canuck helmer Bruce MacDonald, who she says was so inspired during his visit that he's now working on a project set in the snowy getaway."We've had deals done on chairlifts and in hot tubs, or on a stroll at dinner parties," she says. "The culture and environment of Whistler is extremely inspiring, and that's why people connect."This year, organizers are planning events to attract fresh attention, including an outdoor screening of a Pixar shorts program to celebrate the animation studio's 25th anniversary. The fest will also recognize Patton Oswalt with a Spotlight Award for supporting performance in "Young Adult," helmer Jennifer Yuh Nelson with an animation award, Andy Serkis with the Variety Tech Pioneer award and Canuck actor Jay Baruchel for screenwriting.Next year organizers intend to renovate a defunct local movie theater into a state-of-the-art facility with about 275 seats, and make it the home base for year-round programs.Mishaw also hopes to establish an institute that will nurture developing projects to their full potential, as part of a relationship with the Canadian Film Centre."The idea is always being at the forefront of our game," she says. "We have lofty expectations, and we'll see where we land." Wilson stated the series had began lower a path with Craigs first appearance like a gruff, muscular Bond in Casino Royale in 2006. And were adhering to that particular path, Wilson stated. Walt Disney's Mobile Game Character Swampy Gets Web Series (Exclusive)
NY - Swampy, the sewer-dwelling alligator that is the protagonist of Walt Disney's iPhone/iPad video game Where's My Water? is getting a Web video series. Where's My Water?, the Adventures of Swampy will begin with a 12 episode season, featuring 3-4 minute weekly animated episodes. The first episode will formally launch in January. In December, a preview or pilots of sorts will come to Disney.com. Beyond the initial 12 episodes, the company has plans for a story arc that allows to extend the show if the reception is positive. Given the successful start of the mobile game, its first for which the company created an original character, Disney feels the character has resonated so well with audiences that it has green lit an original animated series for Disney Online. The 99 cents game has reached well more than 1 million downloads since its Sept. 22 launch, according to a spokesman for the Disney Interactive Media Group. Swampy is an alligator who lives in the sewers below a metropolis and has an unusual quirk: he can't stand being dirty. As a result, he tries to get clean water to his underground apartment, so he can shower. In the game, players must help Swampy by digging paths to guide water to his subterranean bathtub. Meanwhile, Cranky, the Alpha Gator, always tampers with Swampy's plumbing to stop his water flow. And both alligators' love interest is female alligator Ally. It was a first for Disney to develop an original character for a mobile game and a milestone for the company in original intellectual property developed for a non-traditional screen. Its success "is an important and encouraging sign of Disney's enthusiasm for this character," a spokesman said. "The continued demand and excitement about Swampy clearly indicates that there are a lot of folks out there who are interested not only in the game, but also want to know more about the story," said Mark Walker, senior vp of Disney.com. "We are looking to build out the world and tell Swampy's story and that of other characters." Asked about likely storyline of the Web series, Walker said "we will learn a lot more about Swampy and his friends and the conditions he lives under." Also, viewers will find out more about how Cranky and Swampy try to impress Ally and the dynamics between the characters. "We expect that the world of characters will grow more rich as the game becomes more rich and as we discover new friends within the video series," he added. Disney didn't disclose the production budget of the Web series. The production team behind it is led by executive producer Chris Williams, vp and general manager of Disney Online Originals, who is looking to bring together the writing, production and voice talent. Could any famous actors voice Swampy and the other characters in the Web series? "It's really more about finding the right voice for the character," said Walker. "That might well be someone with whom we work with in the broader Disney family. It probably will not be, but I wouldn't foreclose that...I don't think it's necessary to the success of the program." Could Swampy go on to possible film or TV stardom following the Web series? Without predicting possible future steps, Walker said: "It's fair to say that there is tremendous excitement all around Disney for these characters largely based on the success of the game. People throughout the company have taken note of the tremendous success of Where Is My Water." Asked about possible ways to make money off the online series, Walker said his team is looking at sponsorships and other opportunities. "At Disney.com, we have a great deal of respect for our audience, and we seek to be family-friendly, so any monetization would be consistent with Disney.com's approach overall," said Walker. After its release, Where Is My Water? immediately rose to the top spot in the ranking of the most popular products in Apple's paid app store, remaining number one in the U.S. for three weeks and overtaking another animal-themed game app, the popular Angry Birds. It reached the top spot in 30 countries and counting. As of Wednesday evening, Where Is My Water? ranked at number 6 of the list of top paid apps for the iPad and number 15 of top iPhone apps. Observers took the success of the game as a sign that established entertainment companies can success against gaming upstarts and that Disney is focused on turning around its gaming business. Mondo - Josh Gad
Woodie - Adam Brody
Babs - Debi MazarThe boys are back over at MTV, along with some new friends. Only "Beavis and Butt-head" -- which now somewhat pretentiously carries creator Mike Judge's name upfront -- is still a rowdy, guilty hoot, while companion "Good Vibes" is another adherent to the Seth MacFarlane school of animated comedy -- namely, fire off jokes in rat-a-tat fashion and hope a few connect. "Vibes" does yield a couple of amusing bits, but Judge's mumbling, "heh heh"-ing goofballs once again steal the show. Frankly, it would be worth having "Beavis and Butt-head" back strictly for its hilarious riffs on MTV programming, as the two teenage doofuses -- happily unchanged from their run in the 1990s -- sit on a couch commenting on fare like "16 & Pregnant" and "Jersey Shore." Watching the latter, they're amused by a list the gang puts together trying to trace all their intramural hookups.
"If they like did this chart long enough, they could find out where herpes began," Butt-head drones. Both of the mini-stories within each half-hour are also pretty funny on their own -- one involving teenage girls' relatively recent infatuation with vampires (and B&B's determination to get bit), the other a silly squabble over whether Beavis cried at something he saw on TV.
Mostly, Judge has an unerring ear for pop culture and outright stupidity -- one that mostly eludes "Good Vibes." The series centers on overweight 15-year-old Mondo (voiced by "The Book of Mormon's" Josh Gad), who moves to a Southern California beach town with his trampy mom (Debi Mazar). Mom actually yields the best recurring gag, as she seeks a new job and keeps referring to her employment options being preferable to earning a living "on my knees" or "on my back" -- which, shockingly, doesn't mean what one might think. Other than that, though, it's all about Mondo's efforts to fit in, having quickly been adopted by the goofy surfer Woody (Adam Brody), who becomes his tour guide to this Pacific Coast purgatory. Series creator David Gordon Green ("Pineapple Express") and fellow writers Tom Brady and Christian Lander keep the teen-oriented jokes flying fast and furiously, but there's nothing here to distinguish "Vibes" from any number of similar comedies derived from the familiar indignities of puberty and high school. MTV is long past its own growing pains, but it's telling "Beavis and Butt-head" -- an artifact from its own adolescence -- once again might be the best thing on the network. As for "Good Vibes," think of it as another one of those ho-hum waves you can safely let roll by.With: Jake Busey, Tony Hale, Danny McBride, Olivia Thirlby, Alan Tudyk. Matt's Help guide to Weekend TV: Premieres of Not so long ago, Boss and much more!
Lana Parrilla, Jennifer Morrison Once isn't enough. A second look, or perhaps a second episode, is essential to convince a skeptic that the show may be worth taking a chance on. So it's with ABC's dazzling but dauntingly precious Not so long ago (Sunday, 8/7c), which when I had been thinking about it for Fall Preview left me wondering: "Is ambitiously fanciful fantasia the following Pushing Daisies cult fave or even the next Eastwick insta-flop? (In either case, it'll be a constant climb to happily ever after.) It might be simpler to like whether it were not so convoluted and cheesy."However ABC made another episode (the 3rd, airing November. 6) readily available for review, and that i began to locate myself enchanted and beguiled, prepared to relax with increased sections of the fractured story book. First, though, you need to digest the premise, and also the overstuffed and frequently over ripe pilot will be a lot to swallow. We start inside a lavishly made fairy-tale land where Snow Whitened (Large Love's Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming wrangle by having an Evil Full (Lana Parrilla), who interrupts their wedding using the commitment of a curse. Stated curse arrives just like Snow handles to transmit her newborn daughter Emma via a magical portal into the world. Years pass, and also the grown Emma (House's arch Jennifer Morrison), now a loner of the fugitive hunter, is enlisted with a son to hasten towards the isolated burg of Storybrooke, Maine, where time is frozen and all sorts of the most popular figures of legend reside in lack of knowledge of the fabled roots. The boy thinks Emma can turn back curse, however she needs to face the city mayor (Parrilla again), who's provided to saying such things as, "I'll destroy you if it's the final factor I actually do.Inch (Has she looked at Revenge? Will they have Televisions in Storybrooke?)"Seriously?" Emma remarks with a few frequency, that is understandable. I had been initially deflated by all of the heavy-handed whimsy, however i started to consider Once a little more seriously upon sampling the approaching third episode. It cleverly weaves Lost-like flashbacks - the show's designers are Lost veterinarians, also it shows - taking us to Snow's colorful past like a frisky bandit, performed off against her modern-day look for the Someone In Particular she does not know is her Prince Charming (as well as their meet-cute in the enchanted forest truly is charming). There's gorgeous fun available here, and I am very carefully positive that ABC's persistence in stalling the premiere until per month in to the season, combined with heavy and wise promotion, pays off, a minimum of initially. It might be unfortunate with this book to become closed too early.Want more fall TV news? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!The weekend's other large premiere, Starz's dark and dreary Boss (Friday, 10/9c), is just one of individuals shows I stored wishing would improve or even more interesting the greater I viewed. No such luck. These acer notebooks noticably for giving Kelsey Grammer (Frasier who?) a superbly meaty dramatic workout. A global taken off the sitcom debacle of Hank, his new TV venture isn't any laughing matter - which becomes shateringly apparent in the opening moments once we watch Chicago mayor Tom Kane introduced to earth, though hardly humbled, through the not so good news that he's struggling with an irreversible degenerative brain disease. Ain't we've got fun.Grammer clearly relishes the tragic size of this juicy role. He's part cagey and callous Godfather because he wields energy from his literal bully pulpit, at some point taking an alderman through the ear and humiliating him just like a naughty child. He's also part Shakespearean Lear, raging against fate, his personal and professional misfortunes and also the cynical tides of political chicanery. "During my kingdom, we are all whores," he declares to 2 actual ladies from the evening who're doing stuff you only see on pay cable. (The sexual content frequently feels gratuitously applied, possibly from some acknowledgment that otherwise Boss will be a pretty drab affair.)Grammer brings a remarkable vitality and morally queasy gravity towards the role, because he grooms a handsome but randy idealist (Shaun Hephner) for that governor's race while hiding the extent of his physical worries from his cronies, his co-employees (Kathleen Robertson and Martin Donovan, both excellent) and the steely Lady MacBoss of the estranged wife (the terrific Connie Nielsen).Like a character study, Boss is intriguing, well-behaved and superbly crafted (Gus Van Sant directed the pilot), with the key points of high-finish premium cable. But ultimately, it is really an simpler show to admire than to recommend. Preachy and self-important (together with a by-the-amounts newspaper subplot), it is also glum, plodding and chilly towards the bone. Within the first four hrs of their initial eight-hour run, I can not say I had been ever truly surprised at the familiar political and sordid personal intrigues, or terribly compelled to determine what goes on next. But Starz has restored the show for any second season - discuss hubris - so there's sufficient time for this to earn our election.More highlights in the TV weekend:FridayPick from the evening: Gem Jam Twenty (PBS, 9/8c, check local agendas), a conference from the influential rock-band on its 20th anniversary by filmmaker Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous), a united states Masters presentation airing included in the PBS Arts Fall Festival.Guest-star alert: It is a Buffy reunion around the CW's Supernatural (9/8c) as Charisma Contractor, the first kind Cordelia, plays a witch who removes her anger on her behalf philandering husband (James Marsters, forever Spike) by causing damage to occupants of the small town. ... CBS' A Gifted Guy (8/7c) will get an ER vibe when Eriq La Salle visitors as Evan Morris, an understanding neuro-shrink Michael woos to become listed on his practice. Evan's nickname is "E-Mo," as with "emo," making him the switch side from the gruff Dr. Peter Benton. (This is a reunion of sorts, as Gifted Man's executive producer Neal Baer handled similar responsibilities for several years on ER.) Sadly, the stunt casting is easily the most interesting factor relating to this routine episode, which indicates the show still has not determined an account balance between your medical and also the mystical (embodied with a too-coy Jennifer Ehle as Michael's nagging ghost ex-wife).What exactly else is on? ... Oprah's Lifeclass (OWN, 8/7c) grows to 2 hrs on Fridays effective now, using the second hour an active online/on-air discussion using the Full of Talk herself. Almost comprises in order for there being forget about instances of The famous host oprah Behind the curtain. ... The First 'Three Stooges' Poster Has Arrived
The list of actors that have been attached to the 'Three Stooges' revival is staggering: Jim Carrey, Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Hank Azaria, Johnny Knoxville and Andy Samberg were all considered at one point or another. However, the studio finally settled on Chris Diamantopous, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso (Moe, Larry and Curly, respectively), with supporting roles going to Sofia Vegara, Jane Lynch and Larry David. Now, the first poster from the movie has arrived -- and it is a bit underwhelming. The image only shows the silhouettes of the Stooges. In fact, this leaked picture from the set offers more than the poster does. Oh well, I guess we will have to just hold out for the first trailer. 'The Three Stooges' will hit theaters on April 4, 2012. [via ComingSoon and Facebook] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Vaquero
A BDCine/MiraCine production. Produced by Diego Dubcovsky. Executive producer, Sebastian Ponce. Directed, written by Juan Minujin. With: Juan Minujin, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Pilar Gamboa, Daniel Fanego, Guillermo Arengo, Esmeralda Mitre, Alberto Suarez.A consistently fascinating and occasionally suspenseful study of a Buenos Aires actor whose ambition may be curdling into obsession, "Vaquero" is all the more intriguing if you know it's the feature filmmaking debut of lead player Juan Minujin, a veteran Argentine thesp who has enjoyed considerably more success than his onscreen alter ego. Indeed, it's tempting to read the entire pic as Minujin's alternately scared and simpatico consideration of disasters avoided and setbacks transcended. This well-crafted indie drama may be too low-key and specialized for mainstream auds, but should spark interest in fest and noncommercial exhibition. The elliptical plot pivots on Julian Lamaz (Minujin), a 33-year-old actor who struggles to maintain an affable demeanor while going nowhere fast in his career. Opening scenes establish his fringe status, showing Julian dividing his time between appearing in the Buenos Aires equivalent of an Off Broadway comedy -- opposite a co-star who get all the big laughs -- and playing a supporting character who's routinely pummeled by the macho hero in a hardboiled thriller. Alone, Julian vents his frustrations in voiceover monologues that run the gamut from furious jealousy to even angrier self-loathing. One moment, he's dissing successful actors who, to his mind, are no more talented than he is. The next moment, he unleashes his contempt on himself, admitting, in shockingly funny, blunt-spoken fashion, that he's entirely too fond of viewing Internet porn. "I'll spend the rest of my life," he snarls, "grabbing my cock like it's a handrail." Here and there, Minujin indirectly acknowledges the influence of "Taxi Driver" as "Vaquero" offers an up-close look at a human time bomb. To be sure, Julian never goes as far as Travis Bickle when it comes to uncaging his id. But the potential for a violent outburst remains ever present, so that the aud is poised to expect the worst when Minujin finally gets to audition for what he thinks is a major movie role in an American-produced Western, only to realize much too late that he has prepared for the wrong part. "Vaquero" as whole feels infused with insider info and firsthand experience, and many details -- especially those regarding audition interviews and on-set etiquette -- have the solid ring of truth. Occasionally, the pic plays like a darker and more dangerous version of "Salut l'artiste," Yves Robert's classic 1973 dramedy starring Marcello Mastroianni as a stage and screen bit player. Given Minujin's own background, however, "Vaquero" also recalls Michael Caine's famous description of the gangster he portrayed in "Get Carter" as "the ghost of Michael Caine" -- the man he could have turned out to be if he'd made the wrong move, or not gotten the right break. Lucio Bonelli's nimble lensing is the pic's standout production value.Camera (color, HD), Lucio Bonelli; editor, Pablo Barbieri; music, Diego Vainer; production designer, Sebastian Roses; sound (Dolby Digital), Jesica Suarez. Albanian Oscar choice sparks 'Blood' feud
MOSCOW -- A decision to select American director Joshua Marston's "Forgiveness of Blood" as Albania's Oscar submission has sparked a formal protest from the director of one of the local films that failed to make the cut. Bujar Alimani, whose film "Amnesty" was one of three other contenders, is urging the Oscar selection committee from the Albanian National Center of Cinematography to disqualify Marston's film on the grounds that it is a majority U.S. production. In a letter to the committee, Alimani wrote: " 'Forgiveness of Blood' doesn't fulfil all the necessary requirements by the Academy since its director and co-writer are American, and other key creative components like cinematographer, music composer and editor are American citizens as well." There were three other Albanian films that met the committee's own selection criteria, Alimani said. "I strongly protest this decision since clearly the facts of mine and Joshua's production credits have been ignored and falsified by the deciding committee," he alleges. "I ask that you disqualify 'Forgiveness of Blood' from consideration in your nomination and that you instruct the committee in Albania to meet again and make its decision based on the criteria set by your academy. " There was no immediate response from the selection committee, which had made clear the reasons for its choice when the decision was published. The committee, made up of film industry professionals, Teodor Laco, Esat Musliu, Bujar Lako, Durim Neziri and Agron Tufa, stated that the film was Albanian language, one of the screenwriters, Andamion Murataj, was Albanian, as was the entire cast, the co-producer Lissus Media is Albanian, and most of the crew, and the film was shot entirely on location in Albania. They added: "The film has been well received by the audience and critics alike for the original and fresh approach to an issue still relevant to our society." The decision has sparked a media storm in the tiny Balkans state that lies to the north of Greece and has a barren, Adriatic coastline left largely undeveloped two decades after the collapse of Enver Hoxha's paranoid and secretive pro-Chinese communist regime. Writing in Tirana newspaper Shekulli, journalist Elsa Demo commented: "(There is) a suspicion that the true decision-makers are the ones who come with an inferiority complex and a contempt for the creative people of this country." The decision betrayed "the idea that a foreign director can better represent Albania," Demo said. "That somehow 'The Forgiveness of Blood' gives the only real chance for this country to step up to the highest level of competition on the final night of the Oscars." Kujtim Cashku, rector of Tirana's Marubi film school, told Variety: "The film has been realized in Albania and had a great success. "Instead of dealing with the exotic subject of Albanian blood feuds -- the ancient system of revenge known as kanun -- it deals with love and human relations, and how Albanians digest rules of law that clash with the rules of kanun." Earlier this year, Marston's film won the Berlinale Silver Bear for best script. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com Watch Movies

Autopsy Report: I Have No Idea How She Will It Dies In Theaters Because Of Toon (?)
The Weinstein Co is going through abrutal 2011 with every movie it releases that’s not The King’s Speech. In quick succession, Scream 4, Spy Kids 4D, Our Idiot Brother, Apollo 18, and last weekend’s I Don’t Understand How She Will It didn’t open worth a damn. Which doesn’t even count the rough reception given Madonna’s W.E. in the Venice Film Festival whichHarv isreleasing throughout the honours corridor. (Honours? Not unless of course he is able to buy her a Golden Globe.)I have no idea the way the studio will remain on track using its reorganized finances if Dimension films keep bombing or TWC photos get no traction. If onlyHarvey Weinstein hadn’t braggedduring the Tribeca Film Festival that 2011 was “going to become good year financially” and thathisindie studiowas on trackto outpace even its most lucrative years at Miramax. But which was in April, before TheWeinstein Co started its losing streak. That $150M it produced from The Nobleman Speech before ancillary revenue streams start working won’t last lengthy.Weinstein stated he needs to rebuild “a model that’s beyond Oscar”. The actual question now's whether he even knows how. I Don’t Understand How She Will It took it's origin from a properly-known book similar to the Weinstein Co’sThe Nanny Journals whichwomen declined just like summarily. Issue is, IDKHSDI is really a terrible movie (only 17% fresh on Rotten Tomato plants) starring the annoying Nicole Kidman (just return to television already) within an abominable premise (a functional wife under stress). But request The Weinstein Co why it tanked, and also the claim is thatthe opening weekend from the Lion King three dimensional required a $6M-$7M bite from Parker’s pic. Because older women were built with a choice between seeing Sex And Also The City‘s Barbara like a clone of themselves or taking themselves as well as their kids to Lion King three dimensional – andpicked the toon. (Because of the choice between IDKHSDI along with a kidney transplant, i'd have selected the surgery.) The studio also didn’t understand that women under age 30 “do not connect” to Parker.Nevertheless, casting her in anything when her last2 non-Sex films unsuccessful tolaunch (2008′s Wise People $4M, and 2009′s Have You Heard Concerning The Morgans? $6M) wasn't the wise move. I’m also biased: Barbara was my least favorite Sex And Also The City character.
